Morning, Dan--Maybe I'm getting to be an old fogey, but I miss the days when a John Wayne could thrive in our country. Today we have Leonardo di Caprio instead. chuck sasser

I fell in the American River in California one day when I was a kid. We were having a family day. Mom had been panning gold and we were running along the bank. My Dad jumped in and caught me as I was being sucked into the fast moving stream. You caught that terror and excitement beautifully in your blog post.

Being in water so cold you think you're going to have a heart attack, right away. That brought back some memories. Glad it was only once in my life. Thanks for the your memorial account. I'll have to take a few minutes to get over my memories. By the way, a few weeks ago I was driving on North highway 14 just East of the Sandia Mountains (adjacent to Albuquerque) going to Madrid, New Mexico. A few miles South of Madrid I saw a couple riding horses, with each pulling a loaded pack horse. Both folks were dressed in pure Old West garb. With the exception of the fully paved two-lane road, I thought I had gone through a 150 year time warp.

Sasser at his best, which is no small feat. Who among cowboys, or cowboy wanabes like me, hasn't had their heart stomped on. The songs are full of it. Thanks for this little ditty, Chuck. - Phil
